Lummi Nation’s Proactive Response to the Fentanyl Crisis
Tribal leaders, including representatives from the Lummi Nation, have underscored the critical importance of this financial support. The Lummi Nation, grappling with the devastating impact of fentanyl, has taken proactive measures, including declaring a state of emergency and implementing stringent measures such as drug-sniffing dogs, checkpoints, and bail revocations for drug-related charges.
Additionally, the tribe has inaugurated a pioneering seven-bed facility dedicated to assisting members in overcoming opioid addiction.
Dr. Jesse Davis, medical director of the Lummi Healing Spirit Opioid Treatment program, reports that the facility has provided essential treatment to dozens of individuals, a majority of whom have successfully transitioned to medication-assisted therapy.
Acknowledging the proactive efforts of Indigenous communities, Republican Senator John Braun emphasized the significance of extending support to address the crisis comprehensively.
Among the bills signed into law is the Lucas Petty Act, named after a teenager who tragically lost his life to a fentanyl-laced substance. This legislation mandates the inclusion of fentanyl education in the public school curriculum.
Democratic Representative Mari Leavitt, a sponsor of the bill, stressed the imperative of equipping young people with vital information to navigate the perilous landscape of opioid misuse and fentanyl contamination.
