UnitedHealth, one of the largest health care providers, is in the process of restoring its systems following last month’s cyberattack on Change Healthcare, a key technology provider for insurance claims processing.
While progress has been made in restoring various systems, UnitedHealth has yet to provide a definitive timeline for completing the recovery process.
Impact on Insurance Claims Processing
In a statement released on Monday, UnitedHealth revealed that it is currently undergoing testing of software related to medical claims submission.
Significant strides have already been made in restoring systems for pharmacy claims and payment processing.
Change Healthcare, a vital player in the insurance claims arena, facilitates approximately 14 billion transactions annually, collaborating with multiple insurers in processing claims.
The recent cyberattack, attributed to the ransomware group ALPHV (or Blackcat), targeted some of Change Healthcare’s information technology systems.
The severity of the attack prompted the American Hospital Association to label it as “the most significant and consequential incident of its kind against the US health care system.” The disruption caused by the attack has hindered hospitals’ ability to deliver care, submit insurance claims, and receive payments.
Concerns over the exposure of protected health information in the attack have prompted federal civil rights investigators to launch an inquiry.

UnitedHealth’s Cyberattack Recovery Efforts
UnitedHealth has made notable progress in restoring Change Healthcare’s systems, including the prescription processing platform and the electronic payments platform for billing and payments between care providers and insurers.
Moreover, UnitedHealth announced on Monday its plans to expand temporary funding to support affected doctors and care providers. Additionally, the federal government is offering temporary advance payments for Medicare claims to mitigate the impact of the cyberattack on the health care sector.
