In a harrowing case that has shocked communities across Ohio, Kristel Candelario, a 32-year-old mother, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole after her 16-month-old daughter, Jailyn, tragically died from starvation and severe dehydration.
The heart-wrenching ordeal unfolded last summer when Candelario left her daughter home alone in a playpen for a staggering 10 days while she embarked on a vacation to Detroit and Puerto Rico.
Ohio Mother’s Vacation Leads to Toddler’s Death
Candelario’s guilty plea to charges of aggravated murder and child endangerment, made last month as part of a plea deal with Cuyahoga County prosecutors, concluded a devastating chapter in this distressing saga.
Prosecutors opted to dismiss two murder counts and a felonious assault charge as part of the agreement.
Authorities revealed that upon her return from vacation, Candelario discovered her daughter unresponsive in the playpen and immediately dialed 911.
Tragically, emergency responders arrived to find Jailyn “extremely dehydrated,” and despite their best efforts, they were unable to revive her.
An autopsy conducted by the Cuyahoga County medical examiner’s office concluded that Jailyn’s cause of death was attributed to starvation and severe dehydration, casting a chilling light on the neglect and abandonment she endured during her mother’s absence.
During sentencing at the County Common Pleas Court, Judge Brendan Sheehan delivered a scathing rebuke to Candelario, denouncing her actions as “the ultimate betrayal.”
He underlined how serious her transgression was, saying that in the same way that she had denied her daughter food, she would be robbed of freedom for the rest of her life.
In a deeply emotional plea, Candelario, who has grappled with depression and related mental health challenges, expressed remorse for her actions and sought forgiveness. “There’s so much pain that I have in regards to the loss of my baby, Jailyn,” she tearfully shared. “I’m extremely hurt about everything that happened. I am not trying to justify my actions, but nobody knew how much I was suffering and what I was going through … God and my daughter have forgiven me.”
