FBI Director Christopher Wray stressed before a Senate panel on Monday that there are dangerous people who have illegally entered the United States across its southern border, amid a contentious election-year debate on immigration.
Addressing the annual “Worldwide Threats” congressional hearings, where heads of U.S. intelligence agencies testify, Wray highlighted a spectrum of menacing threats originating from the border.
Intelligence Leaders Address National Challenges & Border Security
“We have had dangerous individuals entering the United States from a variety of sources,” stated Wray, singling out drug trafficking as a particularly pressing concern. He underscored the gravity of the situation by revealing, “The FBI alone seized enough fentanyl in the last two years to kill 270 million people.”
Accompanied by other intelligence leaders including Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines, CIA Director William Burns, and others, Wray elaborated on the multifaceted challenges facing the nation.
While acknowledging the infiltration of criminals across the southern border, Wray clarified that there’s no specific plot detected thus far.

FBI’s Vigilance: Combating Terrorism and Extremism
However, he highlighted the FBI’s intensified efforts in investigating smuggling networks with potential ties to ISIS, emphasizing the agency’s collaboration with international partners in this endeavor. Wray emphasized a heightened threat level across various fronts, encompassing homegrown violent extremists, domestic violent extremists, and foreign terrorist organizations.
The Senate panel also pressed the intelligence chiefs on other global threats, including the escalating tensions involving China, conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, and the potential influence of artificial intelligence on the upcoming 2024 US election.
CIA Director Burns underscored the strategic significance of US support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, warning of dire consequences should such support wane.
He emphasized the pivotal role of supplemental assistance in bolstering Ukraine’s defense capabilities and averting potential losses. Burns cautioned that a failure to provide adequate support could not only compromise European security but also embolden Chinese ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region.
The remarks from Wray and Burns reflect the complex and interconnected challenges facing US national security in an increasingly volatile global landscape.
