Biden and Trump Gear Up for Tuesday’s Primaries, Hopeful for Nominations and a Shot at the General Election

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to secure big victories in Tuesday’s state primaries in the ongoing 2024 fight for the presidency.

With no significant opposition in Georgia, Washington state, Mississippi, and Hawaii, the primary question remains whether either candidate will garner the necessary delegates in each state to reach the 50% national threshold, making them their parties’ presumptive nominees.

First Presidential Rematch Since 1956

The 2024 presidential contest is nearing a crystallizing moment that will likely set the stage for a general election rematch between Biden and Trump. This rematch would be the first featuring two former U.S. presidents since 1956, promising to deepen the nation’s political and cultural divides over the eight-month campaign ahead.

On the eve of Tuesday’s primaries, Trump acknowledged Biden as the Democratic nominee while taking a new jab at the president’s age.

Despite the exchange, Biden focused on Trump during a campaign stop in New Hampshire, highlighting the former president as a serious threat to democracy and expressing his intention to have a more robust presence on the campaign trail.

Georgia holds a pivotal position among the four states with primary contests on Tuesday, given its role as a battleground state in the last presidential election. Both candidates are striving to project strength in this key swing state, even as they grapple with their own challenges.

Trump faces 91 felony counts in four criminal cases, including allegations related to classified documents and attempts to overturn the 2020 election. He also encounters scrutiny over policy plans and relationships with dictators, exemplified by a private meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, known for rolling back democracy in his country.

Biden, at 81, seeks to reassure a skeptical electorate about his physical and mental capabilities while dealing with dissent within his party’s progressive base.

Progressive dissatisfaction has been particularly evident in concerns about Biden’s approach to Israel’s conflict with Hamas in Gaza. As both candidates aim for victory in Tuesday’s primaries, their paths to the general election become clearer, setting the stage for a high-stakes and potentially divisive campaign.
