During his State of the Union address on Thursday night, President Joe Biden made a significant declaration on the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza: a military mission deemed an “emergency”.
The mission aims to construct a port in the Mediterranean Sea on Gaza’s coast to facilitate the delivery of essential aid.
Building Bridges
“I’m directing the US military to lead an emergency mission to establish a temporary pier in the Mediterranean on the Gaza coast that can receive large ships carrying food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters,” President Biden stated during his address to Congress from the US Capitol.
Emphasizing that “No US boots will be on the ground,” President Biden highlighted the critical need for increased humanitarian assistance in Gaza while urging Israel to play its part in facilitating aid access and ensuring the safety of humanitarian workers.
The planned port, previewed by administration officials earlier on Thursday, is designed to handle “large ships carrying food, water, medicine, and temporary shelters,” according to senior aides. A key feature of the port will be a temporary pier capable of accommodating hundreds of additional truckloads of assistance daily.
This collaborative effort, involving the US and partner countries, is expected to take several weeks to plan and execute. Senior defense officials have assured that the operation will not require American troops to be physically present on the ground. Instead, the unique capabilities of the US military will be leveraged, allowing for effective assistance delivery from offshore locations.
