Vice President Kamala Harris sharply criticized Israel during a speech in Selma, Alabama, on Sunday, marking a significant change in diplomatic language.
Harris called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, addressing the humanitarian catastrophe and asserting that Israel must do more to alleviate the suffering.

Speaking in front of the Edmund Pettus Bridge during an event marking the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday, Harris highlighted ongoing discussions about a ceasefire deal. She urged an immediate cessation of hostilities for at least the next six weeks, emphasizing the gravity of the situation in Gaza.
Directing pointed comments at Israel, Harris deemed the conditions in Gaza inhumane and stressed that the Israeli government must do more to address the crisis. She insisted on a significant increase in the flow of aid, stating, No excuses.
Harris called for the opening of new border crossings and urged Israel not to impose unnecessary restrictions on aid delivery.

Additionally, Harris addressed Hamas, calling on the group to accept the proposed ceasefire deal and release hostages in exchange. She pointed out that the deal on the table could facilitate the release of hostages and enable a substantial influx of aid.
These comments from Vice President Harris are indicative of the growing frustration within the US government over the ongoing conflict, which has had repercussions on President Joe Biden’s popularity.

The historical significance of Bloody Sunday, dating back to March 7, 1965, adds depth to Harris’s speech. On that day, voting rights activists were brutally attacked by law enforcement officers on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Alabama.
