In a landmark step for New Mexico’s fiscal planning, the Senate approved a historic $10.1 billion budget proposal with plenty of time for gubernatorial approval.
The monumental spending plan received resounding support in the Senate, garnering a 31-10 vote following enhancements that included an additional $31 million allocation.
Boosting Essential Services
This supplemental funding aims to bolster support for universal school meals, food banks, and various other crucial initiatives.
The proposed state budget entails substantial funding increases across nearly every state agency, accompanied by salary hikes for the majority of state workers and public school employees. Furthermore, it earmarks over a billion dollars from trust funds and endowments for future utilization, a preemptive measure against potential fluctuations in oil and gas revenue.
Despite economic forecasts suggesting a possible decline in oil and gas revenue, lawmakers assert that New Mexico’s financial status remains robust. State Senator George Muñoz emphasized this point, urging against perpetuating the narrative of New Mexico as a financially disadvantaged state.
With the Senate’s approval, the budget proposal now undergoes review by the House, where it must secure endorsement for the Senate’s amendments before advancing to the governor’s desk.
In addition to the budget, the Senate addressed the comprehensive omnibus tax package, consolidating various tax proposals into a single bill.
Notable additions to the tax package include new tax credits for renewable energy solutions, teacher-purchased school supplies, and families adopting special needs children.
