Emerging scientific research is shedding light on the potential of kiwi as a powerhouse fruit for improving mood and vitality.
Conducted by scientists from New Zealand, a recent study has unveiled intriguing findings regarding the mood-enhancing benefits of incorporating kiwifruit into one’s diet.
Dietary Discovery in New Study
Published in the esteemed British Journal of Nutrition, this study suggests that consuming kiwi regularly may lead to significant improvements in mood in a relatively short span of time.
According to Tamlin Conner, a psychology professor at the University of Otago and co-author of the study, small dietary changes like adding kiwifruit can have a noticeable impact on daily well-being.
This effect is attributed to the high levels of vitamin C found in kiwis, which are known to boost mood and vitality among other benefits.
To investigate the mood-boosting effects of kiwi, researchers conducted a diet experiment involving 155 adults with deficient levels of vitamin C. Over eight weeks, participants were given either a placebo, a 250mg vitamin C supplement, or two kiwis daily.
They were then asked to report on their mood, vitality, sleep quality, and physical activity.
Results revealed that both the vitamin C group and the kiwi eaters reported improved moods. However, only the group consuming kiwi reported an increase in self-perceived success.
Furthermore, participants in the kiwi group experienced enhanced vitality and mood within just four days, with effects peaking around days 14-16.

Kiwifruit as Key Player in Improving Mood
Lead author Dr. Ben Fletcher, who conducted the research as part of his PhD at Otago, emphasized the rapid impact of dietary choices on mental health.
He highlighted the SunGold variety of kiwi used in the study, which contains three times as much vitamin C as oranges and strawberries based on edible flesh weight.
These findings underscore the importance of nutrition in mental well-being and suggest that incorporating kiwifruit into one’s diet could yield significant mood-enhancing benefits.
Fletcher advocates for a holistic approach to nutrition and well-being, urging individuals to include a variety of nutrient-rich foods in their diet for optimal health.
Ultimately, this research sheds light on the powerful link between diet and mood, highlighting the potential of kiwifruit as a natural mood booster.
As scientists continue to explore the connections between nutrition and mental health, incorporating kiwi into daily meals may prove to be a simple yet effective strategy for improving overall well-being.
