USGS Alert: 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Occurs South of Hawaii’s Big Island

On Friday, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 5.7 earthquake occurring just south of the Big Island of Hawaii. 

Initially believed to be a magnitude 6.3 event, the quake’s epicenter was located 11 miles south of Naalehu, Hawaii, at a depth of 6 miles. Fortunately, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center assured there was no risk of a tsunami.

Tremors in Honolulu: Earthquake Near Hawaii

Despite the distance, some tremors were felt in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, approximately 200 miles to the north. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency swiftly reassured the public, stating that while significant shaking may have occurred, there was no threat of a tsunami.

Big Island Mayor Mitch Roth, who was in Honolulu for a medical appointment, shared his experience of feeling dizzy before realizing it was an earthquake. 

Immediately contacting emergency management officials, he anticipated reports of potential damage within the hour. Roth emphasized the earthquake’s intensity, labeling it as “a good-sized earthquake” while affirming the absence of a tsunami threat.

Julia Neal, owner of Pahala Plantation Cottages, described the shaking as forceful, causing a mirror and brass lamp to fall. 

She noted the rattling of old wooden plantation homes in the area. Derek Nelson, manager of the Kona Canoe Club restaurant, recounted the strong tremors that rattled knees and shook windows in the Kona Inn Shopping Village on the island’s western side. Despite the intensity, there were no reports of significant damage.

As aftershocks reverberated through the region, residents remained vigilant. Mayor Roth expedited his return to the Big Island, heading to the Honolulu airport in pursuit of an earlier flight.

This seismic event serves as a reminder of the dynamic geological forces at play in the Pacific region and the need for ongoing monitoring and readiness.
