SSDI Pay Explained: Your Comprehensive Guide to Disability Benefits

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are critical lifelines for individuals facing physical or with mental disabilities that prevent them from working.

SSDI benefits are particularly designed to provide financial support based on an individual’s work history and contributions to Social Security.

Navigating SSDI Benefits

Unlike other assistance programs like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for short and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) for short, SSDI benefits are not contingent on household income or the severity of the disability.

Instead, eligibility is based on work history and the inability to work due to a disability expected to last at least 12 months.

To qualify for SSDI benefits, individuals must typically earn less than $1,350 per month and have worked at least five of the last ten years. The benefit amount is calculated using the Average Indexed Monthly Earnings (AIME) and the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA).

The AIME is determined by averaging the highest-earning years over a 35-year period, while the PIA is calculated based on fixed percentages of the AIME and bend points adjusted annually.

In 2020, the average SSDI benefit amounted to $1,258 per month, with higher earners receiving up to $3,011 monthly.

However, the actual benefit amount varies based on individual earnings history and other factors. The Social Security Administration provides a calculator on their website to estimate the expected benefit amount.
