As the son of Korean immigrants, Choi expressed pride in his heritage but emphasized his commitment to serving all communities within the city.

Choi’s appointment comes in the wake of Chief Michel Moore’s unexpected retirement. Moore’s tenure faced heightened scrutiny over issues of excessive force and police-involved civilian deaths.

In contrast, Choi brings 28 years of experience without a record of using deadly force during his career as an officer.

As interim chief, Choi steps into a crucial role during a transitional period for the LAPD. With the city preparing to host major events like the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympics.

The search for a permanent replacement will be a priority for city officials over the next six to nine months. Chief Moore will remain involved as a consultant during this period.

While serving as interim chief, Choi is ineligible to apply for the permanent chief position. He outlined his approach as one of continuity and stability, aiming to facilitate a seamless transition for his successor.

Choi’s steady leadership style was evident as he pledged not to implement drastic changes but rather ensure operational continuity within the department.
