Meta Takes Steps to Identify AI-Created Content on Instagram and Facebook

A move aimed at enhancing transparency and addressing growing concerns over synthetic content, Meta announced plans to begin labeling images created by artificial intelligence products, including those from OpenAI, Midjourney, and Meta’s own tools. 

Nick Clegg, the company’s president of global affairs, shared this development in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Tuesday.

Meta’s Initiative to Label AI-Generated Content

These labels, slated to be rolled out over the coming months, will be applied to AI-generated images posted on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. 

Importantly, images created using Meta’s own AI tools will also be subject to labeling. Clegg emphasized the importance of ensuring users are aware of the origin of the content they encounter, especially as the distinction between human-generated and synthetic content becomes increasingly blurred.

However, Clegg acknowledged that labeling alone will not be a perfect solution given the scale and complexity of AI-generated content on Meta’s platforms. 

Notably, the company currently lacks the capability to identify AI-generated audio and video content produced using external platforms. To address this gap, Meta plans to introduce a feature allowing users to voluntarily label audio or video content as AI-generated upon upload.

The decision to implement labeling measures comes in response to recent incidents highlighting the risks associated with AI-generated content. 

Notably, the circulation of fake sexually explicit images featuring pop star Taylor Swift underscored the urgent need for action. The White House weighed in on the matter, calling on Congress and tech companies to combat the spread of misinformation and non-consensual intimate imagery.

Election-related risks posed by AI were also brought to the forefront following a fake robocall impersonating President Joe Biden during the New Hampshire Primary. 

As concerns mount ahead of the 2024 elections, Clegg emphasized the importance of tech companies taking proactive steps to enable users to discern between authentic and synthetic content.

In light of these developments, Meta’s efforts to label AI-generated images extend beyond a single initiative. 

The company plans to continue labeling such images throughout the next year, citing the significance of upcoming elections worldwide. This extended period will provide Meta with valuable insights to inform industry best practices and refine its approach to combating synthetic content.

As the digital landscape evolves, Meta’s commitment to transparency and user safety remains paramount. 

By implementing labeling measures and collaborating with stakeholders, Meta seeks to mitigate the potential harms associated with AI-generated content while fostering a more informed online environment for users worldwide.
