Bold Theft in Kansas: Jackie Robinson Statue Vanishes from Wichita Youth League Field

Wichita, Kansas, is reeling from the theft of a statue honoring baseball legend Jackie Robinson, a symbol of inspiration for the community. 

The life-sized statue, valued at $50,000, was stolen from the field of League 42, a nonprofit organization providing low-cost baseball registration for children aged 5-14. 

The league, named in homage to Jackie Robinson’s iconic jersey number 42, had raised funds to commemorate the sports pioneer.

Images shared by the Wichita Police Department revealed the theft occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday, with the statue being cut off at the ankles and hauled away. 

Robinson, renowned for breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball as the first Black player, had historical ties to Kansas, having been signed by the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro Leagues in 1944.

Wichita City Council member Brandon Johnson expressed the deep impact of the theft, emphasizing that the statue represented “a symbol of hope” for the community. Johnson lamented the loss, particularly for the children, parents, and coaches associated with League 42, stating, “It breaks my heart.”

Despite the disheartening incident, Johnson expressed optimism, highlighting the concerted efforts of the Wichita Police Department to apprehend the culprits. He acknowledged the support from the public and local businesses, which provided additional camera footage to aid in the investigation.

Offers Rewards for Information Leading to Recovery

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan conveyed his frustration at a Friday news conference, denouncing the audacity of those responsible for stealing the statue. Sullivan emphasized the significance of the timing, as the theft occurred just before the commencement of Black History Month. 

He urged the community’s assistance in locating and returning the stolen statue, underscoring the importance of preserving the history of Jackie Robinson, an American icon.

In an effort to expedite the recovery, Crimestoppers is offering up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest, with an additional $5,000 reward for the safe return of the statue. 

The appeal for public cooperation reflects the community’s determination to rectify this cultural loss and ensure that the legacy of Jackie Robinson remains intact.
