Fake News or Frozen Facts? The Truth About Viral ‘Gatorcicle’ Videos

Online videos depicting seemingly lifeless alligators encased in frozen ponds in North Carolina and Texas have become viral sensations, captivating massive audiences.

Contrary to appearances, employees at gator rescue parks where the footage was captured assure the public that the reptiles are alive and well, showcasing a rarely observed survival instinct known as brumation.

Unveiling the Mystery of ‘Gatorcicles’

George Howard, general manager of The Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, clarified that what viewers are witnessing is a reptilian behavior where alligators slow down their metabolic rates during brumation.

This state of lethargy, interspersed with brief periods of activity, allows the cold-blooded creatures to conserve energy and endure colder temperatures.

The Swamp Park shared images of alligators with their snouts protruding from frozen water, emphasizing that the animals are in a state of brumation.

The positioning of their snouts above the water’s surface ensures they can breathe when the water freezes.

Howard likened this behavior to the reptilian version of hibernation, explaining that the alligators’ slowed metabolism helps them navigate periods when they cannot eat due to the cold.

Typically hidden from public view, this behavior surprised even seasoned gator park employees. Howard recalled his initial disbelief when witnessing alligators brumating in 2018, describing it as a testament to their ability to adapt and overcome challenging conditions.
