NYC Taxpayers Fund $87,000 Luxury SUV for Probation Commissioner

New York City’s Probation Department is facing criticism and controversy after it was revealed that Probation Commissioner Juanita Holmes is now using a luxurious city-funded vehicle amid program cuts and budget constraints.

The department purchased an $86,590 Ford Expedition Platinum in October, complete with high-end features such as heated leather-trimmed seats with massage functionality, a premium Bang & Olufsen stereo system, and a panoramic sunroof.

Probation Commissioner Amidst Department Budget Constraints

City records indicate that after the initial purchase, the car was sent to Valley Van in Valley Stream, Long Island, for the installation of a lights-and-siren package, reportedly costing around $17,000.

While this additional expenditure falls outside the purview of the comptroller’s office, city officials have yet to confirm these details.

Critics argue that the purchase of such a luxurious vehicle is contradictory to the department’s current financial situation, which has led to program cuts and discontent among workers due to low pay.

City Councilman Lincoln Restler expressed concern, stating, “The Department of Probation is eliminating critical programs for at-risk young adults, but can somehow afford a luxury SUV vehicle for the commissioner.

The Department of Probation has the wrong priorities, and this sale should be immediately reversed.”

Holmes took office on March 9, and records indicate that the earliest date for the purchase of the Expedition Platinum is October 5.

The spokesperson for the Probation Department defended the purchase, stating that the vehicle was requested and approved before the city’s budget cuts, emphasizing the need for Commissioner Holmes to conduct city business outside of the office.

New York City’s Probation Department is facing criticism and controversy after it was revealed that Probation Commissioner Juanita Holmes is now using a luxurious city-funded vehicle amid program cuts and budget constraints.

The spokesperson did not provide specific dates for when the vehicle was requested and approved or disclose who approved the purchase.

City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams is the only council member with a city car, and other officials, including Mayor Adams and City Comptroller Brad Lander, use vehicles with lower retail prices compared to the Expedition Platinum.

The controversy surrounding the purchase of the luxury SUV adds fuel to the ongoing debate about the department’s priorities and financial allocations.

As critics call for a reevaluation of the decision, the public and officials alike are closely watching how the situation unfolds against the backdrop of budget constraints and service cuts.
