Apply Now or Miss Out: Affordable Connectivity Program Deadline on the Horizon

In today’s digital age, a reliable internet connection is essential for remote work, online education, and entertainment. However, the financial constraints associated with home internet services have left many individuals struggling to stay connected.

In response to this challenge, the government introduced the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) as part of President Joe Biden’s infrastructure bill in November 2021.

The Impact of the ACP

While the program has made a significant impact, concerns are emerging about its sustainability, with potential expiration in May without additional funding from Congress.

Replacing the Emergency Broadband Benefit (EBB), the ACP focuses on assisting low-income families and individuals who have faced income loss during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With a monthly subsidy of $30 for internet bills, households on Tribal lands receive an increased subsidy of $75 per month. The program has garnered an impressive response, with over 22.5 million households in the US enrolling by January 8, showcasing its substantial positive impact.

Despite its success, the ACP faces uncertainties about its future. A spokesperson for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has indicated that the program may expire by May without additional funding, raising concerns about its availability for new enrollments.

Notably, a recent FCC order stipulates that new enrollments won’t be accepted after February 7, 2024, adding urgency to the situation.

To take advantage of the ACP, eligible individuals and households need to act swiftly.

Eligibility can be determined through participation in existing government assistance programs such as the Lifeline program, Federal Public Housing Assistance, Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, Supplemental Security Income, and Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children.

Additionally, households with incomes at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines qualify.
