Uniqlo Accuses Shein of Copying: Legal Battle Erupts Over ‘Mary Poppins Bag

Uniqlo Co. has filed a lawsuit against fast-fashion rival Shein, accusing the retailer of producing an inferior and unauthorized replica of Uniqlo’s popular ‘Mary Poppins bag.’

The legal action, filed in Tokyo District Court on Dec. 28 by Fast Retailing Co., the operator of Uniqlo stores, demands that Shein cease selling the alleged copycat product, which closely resembles Uniqlo’s Round Mini Shoulder Bag.

The Uniqlo bag has gained popularity on social media platforms, especially TikTok, where users praise its roomy yet compact design.

The nickname ‘Mary Poppins bag’ is a nod to the magical carpet bag featured in the 1964 musical, where the fictional nanny Mary Poppins pulls various items, including a hat stand, from her seemingly bottomless bag.

Uniqlo is seeking damages of approximately 160 million yen ($1.1 million) in its lawsuit, targeting three companies associated with Shein: Roadget Business Pte, Fashion Choice Pte, and Shein Japan Co. The lawsuit alleges copyright infringement and claims that Shein’s imitation product compromises the quality associated with the Uniqlo brand, eroding customer confidence.
