In response to a recent measles outbreak in Philadelphia, a group of doctors known as The Black Doctors Consortium is taking proactive measures by offering free measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines to the community.
The city has reported eight confirmed cases of measles since late December, all among unvaccinated individuals, according to the Philadelphia Department of Public Health.
Measles Outbreak with Free Vaccination
The outbreak began with a child admitted to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in December.
Subsequently, at least three other unvaccinated children were exposed at the hospital and contracted measles, with some patients unknowingly spreading the virus by attending daycare instead of following quarantine instructions.
The Black Doctors Consortium is organizing a pop-up clinic in northern Philadelphia at the Dr. Ala Stanford Center for Health Equity to administer free MMR vaccines.
The group emphasizes that the vaccine will be provided to both unvaccinated children and adults, and testing will be available for those unsure of their immunity status.
The initiative by The Black Doctors Consortium comes as a complementary effort to the city’s health department, which is hosting additional free vaccination sites.
However, the city’s sites require participants to present identification or proof of residency, while The Black Doctors Consortium’s clinic will operate without these requirements.
Measles is highly contagious, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that an infected individual can spread the virus to up to nine out of ten people in close proximity who are not protected, either by wearing masks or vaccination.
Complications from measles can range from relatively mild, such as rashes, to severe conditions like viral sepsis, pneumonia, and brain swelling.
The CDC emphasizes the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine in preventing infection, with one dose being 93% effective and two doses reaching 97%.

Philadelphia Strives for Herd Immunity Amid Measles Resurgence
Despite Philadelphia reporting that at least 93% of children are fully vaccinated against measles by age six, experts stress the importance of achieving a 95% vaccination rate for herd immunity. In 2000, the US declared measles eliminated, but recent outbreaks in unvaccinated pockets have raised concerns.
The Black Doctors Consortium’s initiative serves as a critical response to the current outbreak, aiming to protect the community and prevent the further spread of measles in Philadelphia.
