The Republican Party of Florida faced internal upheaval as it ousted Chairman Christian Ziegler in a special vote on Monday amidst a police investigation into rape allegations against him.
The controversy unfolded as Governor Ron DeSantis campaigned in Iowa, introducing an unwelcome distraction in the final days before the state’s crucial presidential caucus.
GOP Chairman Resists Resignation Calls Amid Rape Allegations
Approximately 200 Florida GOP members, in a closed-door meeting, overwhelmingly voted for Ziegler’s removal, a decision he did not witness. Republican state Sen. Blaise Ingoglia, who participated in the vote, revealed that no one spoke in favor of Ziegler during the proceedings. Evan Power, the vice chair of the state GOP, was selected to replace Ziegler.
Ziegler had been suspended last month, with calls for his resignation from prominent figures, including Governor DeSantis, Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, and other Republican leaders. Ziegler denies the rape accusations, asserting that the encounter was consensual. Despite mounting pressure, he has refused to step down and has not been charged with a crime.
The turmoil within the Florida GOP presents challenges for Governor DeSantis, who is seeking the GOP nomination for president. As the investigation unfolds, DeSantis, trailing behind former President Donald Trump in the polls, faces the task of managing internal party issues amid the critical Iowa caucus.
Republican leaders expressed concern over the distraction caused by the controversy, emphasizing the need to focus on crucial matters during a critical election year.
US Rep. Matt Gaetz downplayed the potential lasting effects on the party, stating that voters prioritize issues such as physical safety and economic security.
The Sarasota Police Department is investigating the rape accusation against Ziegler, who allegedly assaulted a woman at her apartment in October.
The incident involved planned consensual relations with Ziegler and his wife, Bridget Ziegler, who is an elected member of the Sarasota School Board. Bridget Ziegler, appointed by DeSantis to the Walt Disney World governing district board, faces calls to resign from the school board but has refused to do so.
