Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, is confronting fresh allegations outlined in a superseding indictment returned on Tuesday in New York.
The indictment accuses Menendez, who has previously pleaded not guilty to all charges, of making favorable comments about Qatar in exchange for valuable items, including luxury wristwatches.
Alleged Offer of Luxury Wristwatches Unveiled in Indictment
According to the new charges, Menendez was allegedly offered luxury wristwatches with a value ranging between $10,000 and $24,000. The indictment quotes co-defendant Fred Daibes, who attended an event in Manhattan hosted by the Qatari government with Menendez, suggesting the watches to the senator.
The alleged exchange occurred after Daibes sent Menendez a message about a Senate resolution supportive of Qatar, just two days following their attendance at the Qatari government-hosted event. Prosecutors contend that Daibes’ message coincided with the Qatari Investment Company’s consideration of a real estate investment with Daibes.
By March 2022, the Qataris reportedly extended offers to Menendez’s wife, Nadine Menendez, for tickets to the Formula One Grand Prix in Florida.
Subsequently, in 2023, the Qatari Investment Company finalized a joint venture with Daibes, valued in the tens of millions of dollars, as stated in the indictment. It further alleges that Menendez continued to receive valuable items from the Qataris.
