Notably, California, Illinois, and Colorado are at the forefront, enacting measures like “red flag” laws and restrictions on concealed carry.
California’s Concealed Carry Restrictions Stand Strong Amid Legal Challenges
California’s new law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, prohibits concealed carry in 26 locations, including public parks, playgrounds, churches, banks, and zoos. Despite legal challenges, the law stands after a federal court overturned an injunction arguing it violated citizens’ Second Amendment rights.
In Illinois, a law banning the sale of many semiautomatic assault weapons, such as AK-47s and AR-15 rifles, along with restrictions on magazine capacities, goes into effect. This legislation responds to a deadly mass shooting in Highland Park in 2022.
Washington state initiates a 10-day waiting period for firearms purchases, aiming to create a buffer between individuals in crisis and firearms. Buyers must also provide proof of safety training as part of this law signed by Governor Jay Inslee in April 2023.
Colorado tackles the issue of “ghost guns” with a law banning their production. These homemade firearms lack serial numbers and can be assembled from parts kits. However, pro-gun groups challenge the law, asserting it infringes on Second Amendment rights.
