Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a concise New Year’s address to the nation, praising Russia’s united society and reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of the past year.
The four-minute video, notably shorter than last year’s address, was broadcast across the country as each time zone rang in 2024.
Unity Amidst History’s Snowy Backdrop
Against the snowy backdrop of the Kremlin, Putin commended the unity of Russian society in 2023, emphasizing the shared understanding of the historical significance of the country’s journey.
He lauded citizens for their “solidarity, mercy, and fortitude” and acknowledged the two-year-long war in Ukraine as a focal point of the address.
Expressing pride in Russia’s armed forces involved in the conflict, Putin declared them heroes and assured them of the people’s support.
The president affirmed Russia’s commitment to its “special military operation” in Ukraine, stating that the country would never retreat, and there was no force capable of dividing Russians or halting the nation’s development.
The New Year’s Eve broadcast followed a tragic incident in Belgorod, where shelling claimed the lives of 24 people, including three children.
The attack, one of the deadliest on Russian soil since the beginning of the Ukraine conflict, led to subdued celebrations in Moscow, with traditional festivities like fireworks and concerts on Red Square canceled.
Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy secretary of Russia’s Security Council, also extended New Year wishes to the nation.

Vladimir Putin Strategic Triumphs in 2023

In a video message, he emphasized the need for stability, unity, and patriotism in the face of challenges, calling on Russians to make 2024 the “year of the final defeat of neo-fascism.” Medvedev’s remarks echoed Putin’s narrative of combating “neo-Nazis” in Ukraine, drawing on historical references that have been criticized as disinformation.
Analysts have characterized 2023 as a largely positive year for Putin, citing successes in reclaiming the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut and quelling internal revolts.
As the president enters 2024, he is anticipated to leverage diplomatic challenges faced by the West, including divisions over Ukraine, war fatigue, and geopolitical issues like China’s actions in Taiwan and the Middle East, to consolidate Russia’s position on the global stage.
