In a recent announcement, the New Mexico Human Services Department (HSD) shared that it has acquired an additional $9.2 million in funding from the Low-Income Home Energy Program (LIHEAP).
This boost in financial support aims to assist low-income households in meeting their home energy bills. The initiative comes as a proactive response to the challenges posed by rising utility costs, offering relief to those facing financial strain.
Mexico’s LIHEAP Recipients to Receive Extra $200
Beneficiaries who received utility assistance between October 1, 2022, and September 30, 2023, are in for a positive development.
They will receive an extra $200 as part of the supplementary funding. Notably, LIHEAP recipients are not required to take any action to access this additional financial support.
Kathy Slater-Huff, Deputy Secretary for the New Mexico Human Services Department, emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by low-income individuals and families.
The additional funding reflects a proactive approach to easing the financial burden caused by escalating utility expenses.
Slater-Huff stated, “We are committed to providing this essential support for the well-being and stability of our communities.”

LIHEAP aims to provide comprehensive support to those in need, ensuring their homes remain comfortable and energy-efficient.
While LIHEAP has been a vital lifeline for many, concerns about fraud have been raised over the years.
A 2010 audit by the state’s Government Accountability Office found that 5% to 9% of payments made through the program were associated with fraud.
Despite this, no formal audit has been conducted since 2010. The recent funding injection underscores the ongoing importance of monitoring and ensuring the integrity of programs like LIHEAP.
The infusion of $9.2 million into New Mexico’s LIHEAP program signifies a crucial step in supporting low-income households facing energy-related financial challenges.
As the program continues to evolve, it remains essential to address concerns, such as fraud, and uphold the commitment to providing essential support for the well-being of communities across the state.
