The source of the colossal waves lay in powerful cyclones over the northern Pacific, generating swells ranging from 12 to 17 feet. Some predictions even foresaw breaking waves reaching an astonishing 25 feet at certain points along the California coast, exacerbated by astronomical high tides, heightening the risk of coastal flooding.

Meanwhile, Hawaii grappled with a similar onslaught of massive swells, prompting the weather service to issue a high surf warning, later downgraded to an advisory on Friday. With large breaking waves of 18 to 22 feet along some north-facing shores and strong currents, swimming remained perilous in the Hawaiian waters.
