Oprah Winfrey Opens Up: Why the Media Mogul Has Never Sought Professional Help

In a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Oprah Winfrey shared insights into her journey with mental health and wellness.

The 69-year-old media mogul discussed her unique approach to therapy and how she navigated the changing landscape of discussing mental health in the public sphere.

Therapy Taboo to Shaping Self-Work

Winfrey revealed that she chose to have her therapy sessions in front of a national audience during her talk show’s early days in 1986. At that time, discussing therapy on television was considered taboo, and she played a pivotal role in breaking down those barriers.

Despite advocating for others to seek therapy throughout her show’s 25 seasons, Winfrey admitted that she has never attended a therapy session for herself.

The talk show icon reflected on the societal shift towards accepting therapy and the impact her openness had on shaping the national discussion around self-work.

Drew Barrymore, the show’s host, expressed her gratitude, acknowledging that Winfrey had been a source of inspiration since her adolescence.

Barrymore shared a personal revelation, stating that Winfrey’s influence had helped her overcome negative self-perceptions, emphasizing the positive impact of Winfrey’s authenticity.

In a separate interview on December 6, Winfrey discussed her commitment to physical well-being. Attending the premiere of “The Color Purple” in Los Angeles, she revealed details about her regular wellness routine and recent weight loss.

In a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Oprah Winfrey shared insights into her journey with mental health and wellness.

Winfrey highlighted that her approach to well-being involves a comprehensive strategy rather than a single element. She mentioned being on the treadmill that day and underscored the importance of a holistic approach to health.

Her commitment to physical health is not a recent development. In a 2017 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Winfrey outlined her fitness routine, including time on an Octane elliptical machine and a treadmill.

She detailed her workout, combining elliptical training, treadmill walking, and sit-ups to maintain a consistent fitness regimen.

Despite her dedication to exercise, Winfrey has been candid about her feelings towards it. In a 2020 interview with Today, she admitted, “Here’s the thing about exercise: I still hate it so much. I still do it. I think everyone’s waiting to love it. You’re not going to love it, but you do the thing you need to do to make yourself feel whole and well.”

Oprah Winfrey’s openness about her mental health journey and commitment to holistic well-being continues to inspire and contribute to important conversations surrounding self-care and self-work.
