Exhausted Nation: Chronic Fatigue Affects Millions of Americans

A report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) sheds light on chronic fatigue syndrome in the United States, revealing that more than 3 million Americans are affected by this often-overlooked illness.

The findings underscore the significance of chronic fatigue syndrome and its far-reaching impact on individuals’ lives while also emphasizing the need for increased awareness and research into the causes and treatments for this complex condition.

Marked Increase Among US Adults

The CDC’s report, released on Friday, discloses that 1.3% of US adults, approximately 3.3 million people, experienced chronic fatigue syndrome between 2021 and 2022.  This revelation marks a significant increase from previous estimates, prompting researchers to acknowledge that the actual numbers may be higher as many cases go undiagnosed.

Dr. Elizabeth Unger, a study author, emphasized that chronic fatigue syndrome is not rare, dispelling any misconceptions surrounding its prevalence. The syndrome’s causes remain unclear, posing challenges for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.

Chronic fatigue syndrome, or myalgic encephalomyelitis, is characterized by persistent fatigue lasting more than six months, significantly impacting daily activities. The condition often manifests as an intense crash after physical, mental, or emotional exertion, with rest or sleep providing little relief.

Debilitating symptoms, including pain, dizziness, and cognitive difficulties, contribute to the overall challenges faced by individuals with chronic fatigue syndrome. The CDC study draws from National Health Interview Survey data, revealing important demographic patterns associated with chronic fatigue syndrome.

The prevalence of the illness increases with age, peaking in late middle age, with women more likely to be affected than men. Socioeconomic factors, such as rural residence with lower family income, correlate with higher rates of chronic fatigue syndrome.
