As the new year approaches, the National Park Service (NPS) has unveiled its annual list of free entrance days for 2024.
These six days, strategically placed throughout the year, aim to provide Americans with cost-friendly opportunities to explore the nation’s breathtaking landscapes.
A Guide to National Park Fee-Free Days
Ordinarily, entry to the 63 national parks in the United States comes with a fee ranging from $10 to $35, making the designated free days an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers.
The entrance fee-free days, according to NPS spokesperson Kathy Kupper, align with days of celebration and commemoration, ranging from national holidays to park-specific occasions. The list for 2024 includes:
- Jan. 15 — Martin Luther King Jr. Day
- April 20 — First Day of National Park Week
- June 19 — Juneteenth
- Aug. 4 — Great American Outdoors Day
- Sept. 28 — National Public Lands Day
- Nov. 11 — Veterans Day
Kupper emphasized that these dates invite individuals to explore parks they may have yet to visit.
While these fee-free days cover entrance expenses, visitors should note that charges for services and amenities such as camping reservations, boat launches, and special tours still apply.
However, it’s an excellent opportunity for families and outdoor enthusiasts to experience the natural wonders the national parks offer without the usual entry cost.
For those who cannot make it on the designated days, over 300 national park sites, including monuments, historical places, seashores, and trails, are always free to visit.
Kupper clarified that only 109 of the 400-plus national parks currently have an entrance fee.
Popular parks near major metropolitan areas, such as Shenandoah National Park and Joshua Tree National Park, tend to experience increased traffic on fee-free days.
Kupper suggests that these days incentivize nearby populations to choose those specific days for park visits.
Kupper recommends exploring lesser-known parks like Glacier National Park in Montana or Big Bend National Park in Texas for those seeking alternatives and hoping to avoid crowds.
These parks, which require extensive travel, attract fewer visitors on fee-free days.

Maximizing Your National Park Adventure
To optimize the national park experience, Kupper advises visitors to plan well in advance. Checking the NPS.gov website for updates, reservation requirements, road closures, and weather concerns is crucial.
Whether traveling with family or embarking on a solo adventure, being well-prepared ensures a smooth and enjoyable exploration of these natural wonders.
The National Park Service’s announcement of free entrance days for 2024 provides an excellent opportunity for individuals and families to embark on affordable outdoor adventures.
As Americans plan their vacations and explore the nation’s diverse landscapes, these designated days encourage everyone to connect with nature and experience the beauty of the country’s national parks.
