Deathbed Confession: Man Confesses to Decades-Long Bank Robbery and Fugitive Status

In a shocking revelation that unfolded in a recent episode of the podcast “Smoke Screen: My Fugitive Dad,” Ashley Randele shared the unbelievable story of her late father, who, in his dying days, confessed to being Ted Conrad, the mastermind behind one of the nation’s greatest unsolved bank heists.

The astonishing revelation has left many intrigued by the dual life led by a man who lived under the alias of Tom Randle.

The Double Life of a Bank Robber

Ted Conrad, formerly known as Tom Randele, pulled off a daring bank heist on July 11, 1969, at the Society National Bank in Cleveland.  Working as a vault teller, Conrad disappeared with $215,000 (equivalent to approximately $1.8 million today) over the weekend, leaving the money and his previous identity behind.

The audacious crime, reminiscent of the 1968 movie “The Thomas Crown Affair,” shocked those close to Conrad, who had often spoken openly about the ease of such a heist.

Conrad’s sudden departure from Cleveland began a new, fabricated life. Fascinated by the character Thomas Crown from the movie, Conrad executed the heist with an air of sophistication and flair.

Friends and family, including high school best friend Russell Metcalf, were left in disbelief as news spread of the missing funds and the disappearance of Conrad.

Under his new identity, Conrad settled in Lynnfield, Massachusetts, where Ashley Randele knew him as a loving father who favored double-pleated khaki pants and golf shirts. Despite the decades-long facade, Ashley admitted that she never suspected her father of being a fugitive mastermind.

The revelation of Conrad’s true identity was a shock, challenging Ashley’s understanding of the man she thought she knew.
