Connecticut Police Save Woman from 100-Foot Bridge Leap

In a remarkable display of courage and quick thinking, Connecticut police officers averted a potential tragedy by successfully rescuing a woman contemplating self-harm on the Baldwin Bridge. 

The heartwarming incident unfolded on Monday, November 27, in response to a 911 call reporting a woman standing precariously on the side of the bridge, approximately 100 feet above the Connecticut River.

Heroic Rescue on the Edge

Upon arriving at the scene, officers were confronted with a distressing sight – a woman who had climbed over the metal safety fencing perched on a narrow five-inch ledge.  The river’s swift currents exacerbated the problem, heightening the rescue mission’s urgency.

The video footage captured Sgt.’s composed and empathetic approach. Matthew Belz engaged in a calm conversation with the distressed woman. Simultaneously, Sgt. Ashley Harkins displayed exceptional courage as she climbed the safety fence, placing herself at risk on the narrow ledge above the flowing river to assist in the rescue effort.

With skill and determination, the two sergeants managed to convince the woman to move her hands to the fencing. They then guided her onto Sgt.’s legs. 

Harkins safely pulled her back over the fence with the assistance of responding troopers. The distressed woman was promptly handed over to waiting emergency medical services for immediate treatment.

The Connecticut State Police promptly acknowledged and commended Sgt’s swift and decisive actions. Harkins and Sgt. 

Belz expressed gratitude for their heroism in saving the life of the distressed woman. Special recognition was also extended to DEEP Colonel Chris Lewis and other State Troopers from Troop F who assisted at the scene.
