The seizures occurred following a public event on Monday night, as confirmed by the mayor’s attorney, Boyd Johnson.

According to Johnson, the mayor promptly complied with the FBI’s request, willingly providing them with the electronic devices. Emphasizing Adams’ cooperation, Johnson stated that the mayor has not been accused of any wrongdoing and continues to assist in the investigation.

The incident follows federal agents’ search of the Brooklyn home of Adams’ top campaign fundraiser, Brianna Suggs, prompting the mayor to cancel a planned trip to meet with White House officials in Washington.

Adams, a Democrat, maintained his confidence in his team’s adherence to the law and expressed ignorance of any wrongdoing within his campaign during a press conference on Wednesday.

The FBI confiscated electronic devices, including phones and an iPad, from Mayor Eric Adams of New York City as part of an ongoing probe into his campaign fundraising.

In a statement released on Friday, Johnson hinted at the discovery of improper behavior, without disclosing details. He mentioned that, in the spirit of transparency and cooperation, the identified misconduct had been promptly reported to investigators.

The focus of the investigation remains undisclosed by prosecutors, but a New York Times report indicates a connection to a potential campaign conspiracy with the Turkish government involving donations from foreign sources, possibly funneled through straw donors.

Adams, a former police captain, emphasized his expectation for all staff members to follow the law. At a news conference, he expressed commitment to cooperation with the investigation, emphasizing transparency.

While the FBI has reportedly returned some of Adams’ devices, the campaign spokesperson did not specify which devices were still in the agency’s possession. Adams, elected mayor two years ago, has been in office since January 2022.

The investigation adds a layer of complexity to his political career, which began after a distinguished 22-year police career. Adams, a political centrist, secured his mayoral victory in 2021, positioning himself as tough on crime. As the investigation unfolds, the political landscape in New York City remains uncertain, leaving residents and observers awaiting further developments.
