OpenAI Introduces Customizable AI Applications to Boost Its Consumer ChatGPT Business

Leading AI research company OpenAI is growing its consumer business by launching a cutting-edge marketplace for customized AI applications.

These AI applications, known as GPTs, are early versions of AI assistants that perform various real-world tasks, such as teaching math or designing stickers, on behalf of users.

OpenAI’s Groundbreaking Marketplace

OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, introduced this innovative marketplace at the AI lab’s first developer conference, which attracted 900 developers from around the globe. The move comes as OpenAI aims to leverage the immense popularity of ChatGPT by incentivizing developers to create applications within its ecosystem.

ChatGPT, launched in November 2022, has already amassed an impressive user base of 100 million weekly active users, signaling a strong demand for AI-powered conversational tools.

OpenAI plans to launch a GPT Store later this month, where users can share their GPTs and earn money based on the number of users they serve. This initiative represents a renewed effort from the company to create a successful ecosystem for ChatGPT plugins, which encountered challenges earlier this year.

Altman envisions a future where users can simply ask their computers for assistance with various tasks, and these GPT-powered AI assistants will seamlessly fulfill their requests. He emphasized the importance of a gradual and iterative deployment approach to address the safety challenges associated with AI technology.

In addition to introducing GPTs, OpenAI made a series of developer-focused announcements, including significant cost reductions that were met with enthusiastic applause from the conference attendees.

The company also unveiled a new GPT-4 Turbo model, which is both more cost-effective and capable of processing larger volumes of data compared to its predecessor, GPT-4.

OpenAI also introduced assistant application programming interfaces (APIs) with vision and image capabilities and initiated a beta program for developers to fine-tune GPT-4 models, further expanding the possibilities for AI development.
