Biden Calls for a Road to Peace Amid Israel-Gaza Crisis

Biden emphasized the need for peace in Israel-Gaza, striving for independent states for Israelis and Palestinians and improved relations with Israel’s Arab neighbors.

During a joint press conference with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Biden reiterated the ironclad US support for Israel’s defense but stressed the importance of looking ahead to the region’s future post-Gaza crisis.

Biden’s Call for a Two-State Solution

Biden expressed the belief that Israelis and Palestinians equally deserve to live side by side in safety, dignity, and peace. He emphasized the importance of a two-state solution, requiring a concerted effort from all parties involved, including Israelis, Palestinians, regional partners, and global leaders, to pave the way for lasting peace.

Regarding the recent attacks and casualties, Biden suggested that one of the reasons behind Hamas militants’ attack on southern Israel was to prevent the normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

Biden acknowledged the loss of life in both Israeli airstrikes and attacks from Gaza but stated that he had reservations about the accuracy of the casualty figures presented by the Palestinians.

Biden also expressed concern about the treatment of Palestinians by some Israelis, particularly condemning extremist settlers in the West Bank who have attacked Palestinians. He urged an end to these attacks, emphasizing that Palestinians should be able to live in the places they are entitled to without fear.

In response to these developments, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that Australia would provide an additional $15 million in aid for Gaza civilians, emphasizing the humanitarian aspect of the conflict.

Many nations have called on Israel to consider a humanitarian pause in its attacks on Hamas in Gaza, especially in light of the high number of casualties, including children. Biden, while expressing strong support for Israel, has also urged the country to uphold democratic principles.

Australia, as a key ally in the Pacific, plays a significant role in international relations, and President Biden’s visit to the country underscores the importance of this partnership, particularly amid regional and global challenges.
