Ron DeSantis, a 2024 GOP presidential candidate and Trump’s challenger, has slammed Trump’s assertion that Hezbollah is extremely intelligent.
In a recent address at a Club 47 event in West Palm Beach, former President Donald Trump’s comments about Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group responsible for recent attacks on Israel, have ignited a heated debate within the Republican Party.
DeSantis Denounces Trump’s Praise for Hezbollah
DeSantis condemned Trump’s choice of words, deeming them absurd, and expressed serious concerns over praising Hezbollah, a designated terrorist organization known for its violent actions.
During the event, Trump also shifted blame onto President Joe Biden for the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist group, Hamas.
Trump asserted that had the 2020 election not been allegedly rigged, there would be no consideration of entering Israel. This assertion, rooted in baseless claims of election fraud, sparked further criticism from DeSantis, who condemned the timing of such statements, given the ongoing crisis and loss of innocent lives in the region.

GOP’s Complex Dynamics on International Issues
In response to Trump’s remarks, DeSantis took to social media, stating, “Terrorists have murdered at least 1,200 Israelis and 22 Americans and are holding more hostage, so it is absurd that anyone, much less someone running for President, would choose now to attack our friend and ally, Israel, much less praise Hezbollah terrorists as ‘very smart.’” He affirmed his commitment to standing with Israel and treating terrorists as they deserve.
Throughout the day, Trump made similar claims regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s level of preparedness, implying that under his leadership, Israel wouldn’t have needed to be as prepared for such crises.
Trump also exploited the Middle East crisis to fuel unfounded fears about immigration through the U.S.-Mexico border, linking the situation to potential threats within the United States.
DeSantis, on the other hand, unequivocally affirmed Israel’s right to self-defense and advocated for the complete annihilation of Hamas, highlighting a stark contrast in approach and policy stance between him and the former president regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict.
The differing opinions within the GOP regarding these critical international issues demonstrate the complexity and depth of the party’s internal dynamics as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
