Medicare Open Enrollment Safety: State Shares Tips to Protect Seniors from Scams

Officials are stressing the significance of alertness as the open enrollment period for Medicare draws near and are offering advice on how to shield seniors from potential fraud and scams.

This crucial time, from October 15 to December 7, allows beneficiaries to review and make changes to their Medicare coverage for the upcoming year.

Medicare Beneficiaries’ Priority

The state health department, in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, has issued a series of guidelines to educate seniors on how to safeguard themselves from scams during the open enrollment period. With scammers becoming increasingly sophisticated, it’s imperative for seniors and their families to stay informed and exercise caution.

First and foremost, officials stress that Medicare beneficiaries should never share personal information, such as their Medicare number or Social Security number, with unsolicited callers.

Legitimate organizations, including Medicare, will not initiate contact over the phone to request sensitive information.

Moreover, seniors are urged to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a Medicare representative. It’s advisable to hang up and call Medicare directly at a trusted number to confirm the legitimacy of the call. A red flag should be raised if the caller exerts pressure or threatens consequences to obtain information or payment.

Seniors are also encouraged to review their Medicare Summary Notices (MSN) and Explanation of Benefits (EOB) statements diligently. Any discrepancies or suspicious activities should be reported immediately to Medicare. Keeping records of medical appointments, tests, and services received can aid in identifying potential fraudulent billing or unauthorized services.

In addition, beneficiaries should consider enlisting the help of trusted family members or authorized representatives when navigating Medicare decisions.

Seeking guidance from certified Medicare counselors and the local State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) can provide valuable insights and ensure legitimate transactions.

By arming seniors with knowledge and strategies to protect themselves, authorities aim to create a safe environment for Medicare open enrollment, enabling beneficiaries to make informed decisions that best suit their healthcare needs while avoiding falling victim to scams.
