The incident occurred in the Navy Yard neighborhood at approximately 9:30 p.m
Congressman Cuellar’s Carjacking Ordeal
Cuellar had been parking his vehicle when three assailants, armed and determined, approached him and forcibly took possession of his car. The suspects, described as Black men wearing all black clothing, left Cuellar in shock as they made a swift getaway in his white Honda CHR.
The gravity of the situation prompted an immediate police response, with both the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police Department converging on the scene at New Jersey Avenue and K Street Southeast. The entire block was cordoned off as investigators began their work to apprehend the perpetrators.
The presence of House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar, a representative from California, at the crime scene underscored the seriousness of the situation. Capitol police were seen processing the scene and obtaining a statement from Cuellar as investigators continued tracking the suspects.

Congressional Security Challenges in Washington, DC
The incident marks the second instance this year where a Democrat in Congress has fallen victim to a crime in the nation’s capital. In February, Minnesota Representative Angie Craig endured a harrowing experience when she was attacked in an elevator at her apartment building, bravely defending herself against her assailant.
Furthermore, this carjacking occurred just two weeks after law enforcement officials held an open forum on Capitol Hill. The event was aimed at addressing public safety concerns in the neighborhoods surrounding the Capitol, reflecting the ongoing challenges faced by members of Congress and their staff.
Unfortunately, this year has seen several congressional staffers becoming victims of crimes in the District of Columbia, highlighting the need for improved safety measures. These incidents include a brutal attack on a US Representative Brad Finstad’s staff member during the Congressional baseball game in June and an assault on a member of Senator Rand Paul’s staff in broad daylight in March.
The investigation into Congressman Cuellar’s carjacking continues as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all individuals in the nation’s capital, including elected officials.
