Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig Announces GOP Senate Primary Bid in Michigan

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig, a notable figure in Michigan’s political landscape, is preparing to enter the race for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat, according to reliable sources.

This move follows his thwarted bid for governor due to fraudulent signatures on his paperwork last year.

Craig’s Strategic Alignment with Former President Trump

Craig’s entry into the race adds to a growing field of GOP candidates vying to shift a seat that has remained under Democratic control for over two decades.

Craig’s strategic positioning aligns with an eye on securing the endorsement of former President Donald Trump, a significant force in Republican primaries. Trump’s endorsement has historically held sway in GOP candidate selections. Craig has expressed strong support for Trump, sharing his pride in being an American during Trump’s presidency.

In contrast, other Republican candidates like former U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers and potential contender former U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer have differing histories with Trump. Rogers has previously criticized Trump, while Meijer voted to impeach the former president after the storming of the U.S. Capitol in 2021.

Michigan Republicans are eager to replace Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow, the U.S. Senate’s third-highest-ranking Democrat, who announced her retirement in January after four terms.

While Michigan has been a swing state, Republicans haven’t won a U.S. Senate race there since 1994, making this contest critical for both parties.

James Craig’s tenure as Detroit’s police chief from 2013 to 2021 garnered him significant name recognition. If he secures the GOP nomination and triumphs in the general election, he would join a select group of Black senators, bringing representation to Michigan and contributing to the national political landscape.

An official announcement of Craig’s candidacy is anticipated in the coming week, marking a significant moment in Michigan’s upcoming Senate race, shaping the future of the state’s representation in the U.S. Senate.
