Tesla Model S Plaid Takes on Bugatti Chiron Super Sport in Epic Drag Race

In automotive performance, there are two primary avenues to achieving extraordinary power: harnessing the might of a large-displacement internal-combustion engine with forced induction or embracing the cutting-edge technology of a giant battery combined with multiple electric motors.

A recent drag race video from Carwow provides a fascinating glimpse into the strengths and weaknesses of each approach.

Combustion Engines vs. Electric Motor Dominance

In this exhilarating showdown, we witness a duel between the 1020-horsepower Tesla Model S Plaid and the formidable 1600-horsepower Bugatti Chiron Super Sport.

While the numerical difference in power is substantial, it’s important to remember that drag racing is about more than just sheer horsepower; it’s about torque, traction, and weight.

In this matchup, the torque figures reveal a closely contested battle.

The Tesla Model S Plaid generates an impressive 1050 lb-ft of torque, while the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport isn’t far behind, boasting 1080 lb-ft. Additionally, the Bugatti holds an advantage in weight, tipping the scales at 4587 pounds compared to the Tesla’s 4828 pounds.

This weight differential could play a role in the outcome.

Notably, the Tesla Model S Plaid featured in the race is equipped with the Track Pack, a package that enhances performance with various upgrades.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the owner had reinstalled street tires on the electric vehicle (EV) for this particular race.

While the Track Pack offers improved braking and enhanced aerodynamics benefits, these advantages might not be fully realized in a straight-line acceleration test.

The drag race results provide valuable insights into the performance capabilities of these two remarkable machines. As anticipated, the electric Tesla exhibits a superior launch from a standstill and during a rolling start. Electric motors deliver instantaneous torque, eliminating any delay and the need for downshifting when initiating a roll.

Conversely, gasoline-powered engines, particularly those with high horsepower, tend to shine at higher speeds.

This is precisely why the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport ultimately emerges as the victor in both races, showcasing its prowess as it reaches astonishing speeds.

In the half-mile rolling race, the Bugatti initially struggles but eventually surges ahead, achieving a remarkable 206 mph, while the Tesla’s performance plateaus in the low 180s.

Nevertheless, there is a compelling argument favoring the Tesla Model S Plaid’s performance. Despite its defeat, the Tesla offers a formidable challenge to the Bugatti, considering the significant price gap between the two vehicles.

The Bugatti, known for its astronomical price tag, costs millions more than the relatively attainable Model S Plaid.

In automotive performance, there are two primary avenues to achieving extraordinary power: harnessing the might of a large-displacement internal-combustion engine with forced induction or embracing the cutting-edge technology of a giant battery combined with multiple electric motors.

Furthermore, the electric Tesla’s impressive performance is achieved without emitting any tailpipe emissions, underlining the environmental advantages of electric propulsion.

In essence, while internal combustion cars like the Bugatti may continue to hold an edge in top-end speed, electric vehicles like the Tesla Model S Plaid are democratizing speed and bringing exhilarating acceleration to a broader audience.

As electric technology continues to advance, it’s evident that EVs are not just the future of automotive performance but also a key player in making high-speed thrills accessible to enthusiasts worldwide.
