George W. Bush Recounts Surprise Encounter with Yevgeny Prigozhin in St. Petersburg

The dynamic and frequently hilarious former president George W. Bush recently related an incredible incident at the Yalta European Strategy Conference. 

Bush disclosed that he had a chance to interact with Prigozhin more than 17 years ago while thinking about the news of the Wagner Group’s infamous founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin’s passing in a plane crash.

Prigozhin’s death was “shocking” to you, Bush was asked during his video chat at the Kyiv conference. 

In his customary manner, the former president replied, “No, what’s shocking to me is that I saw a picture the other day of a G8 summit in St. Petersburg, where he was the guy serving me the food.” Bush added, “He was Putin’s chef, and he was in the picture.” with a smirk.

The conversation took an unexpected turn when it was revealed that Yevgeny Prigozhin and I had previously met.

At the time, Prigozhin was best known for his work as Vladimir Putin’s chef. Bush feigned ignorance of his precise conversation with Prigozhin but quipped lightheartedly, “All I know is I survived.”

The incident happened on July 14, 2006, in St. Petersburg, Russia, during the 32nd G8 Summit.

When they first met Prigozhin, President Bush and his wife, Laura Bush, were dining with Putin.

The 2006 G8 Summit was notable since it was the first time Russia had hosted such a big international event. 

It was a moment when Moscow and Washington were intensively negotiating the prospect of enhancing commercial ties and Russia’s potential membership in the World retail Organization.

Yevgeny Prigozhin earned the nickname “Putin’s chef” at that time because of his assistance in hosting state dinners and serving as the Russian president’s caterer. 

His commercial empire, nevertheless, went beyond the food industry to include the Wagner Group, a private military firm, and a contentious troll factory that the US Justice Department claims interfered with elections.

 Publicly criticizing Russia’s top military officials, Prigozhin also bemoaned the significant casualties his private armed group had suffered during the fight.

Unexpectedly, Prigozhin said in June that there would be an armed uprising against the Kremlin, alleging that his men were heading in that direction. 

But when Prigozhin negotiated a deal with Putin and left for exile, the revolt was quickly put to an end.
