Teen Tragically Passes Away After Attempting Viral ‘One Chip’ Challenge

In a tragic incident emphasizing the potential dangers of social media challenges, a 14-year-old boy from Massachusetts died after participating in the infamous ‘One Chip Challenge.’

The family of Harris Wolobah believes that the piquant chip challenge contributed to his untimely death, highlighting the dangers posed by such trends.

According to Harris’s mother, Lois Wolobah, the tragic events transpired when her son ingested an extremely spicy Paqui chip at school as part of a viral challenge.

Harris began feeling ill after eating the chip, prompting his family to fetch him from Doherty Memorial High School in Worcester.

Initially, Harris appeared to be recovering, but later that day, shortly before basketball tryouts were scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m., his sibling discovered him unconscious.

Harris was rushed to a nearby hospital but pronounced deceased upon arrival.

The family believes there is a connection between the chip challenge and Harris Wolobah’s departure, pending the results of an autopsy.

The ‘One Chip Challenge,’ promoted on the Paqui website, dares participants to consume a particularly spicy chip and endure the resulting searing sensation without drinking any liquids. The company’s slogan provokes competitors by asking, “How long can you last before you spiral out?”

Paqui underscores that only adults should attempt the challenge, even though it comes with warnings about potential medical consequences.

Participants are encouraged to seek medical attention if they experience symptoms, including difficulty breathing, fainting, or extended nausea after consuming the chip.

The chipmaker’s website also advises individuals to thoroughly cleanse their hands after handling the chip and to avoid touching their eyes or sensitive areas.

According to the company’s website, this year’s chip version contains the fiery Carolina Reaper Pepper and Naga Viper Pepper, promising a genuinely twisted experience.

In response to consumers’ safety concerns, Paqui reassured them last year that the company takes safety seriously and provides explicit product allergens and safety information.

Before undertaking a challenge, the organization emphasized that participants must thoroughly understand its nature and suitability.

The tragic death of Harris Wolobah serves as a sobering reminder of the potential dangers posed by ubiquitous social media trends and the significance of promoting safe and responsible challenges among young people.

The incident has left the community in mourning. Worcester Public Schools are providing bereavement counseling and emotional support to students and faculty affected by the loss of the “rising star.”
