After the US announced a $80 million military finance package for Taiwan, tensions between China and the United States have risen.
China has expressed its deep displeasure and warned that a “storm of lethal consequences” is coming in reaction to what it perceives as a red line being crossed by the United States.
US Approves $80 Million Taiwan Military Aid
An increasingly aggressive intervention in the region, according to The Global Times, a state-run communist daily in China, was chastised by the US for its military financing program for Taiwan.
The op-ed in the newspaper warned that Taiwan must ignore the “brewing and imminent storm of lethal consequences.
China has warned that its response will go beyond simple comments and strongly disapproves of these activities.
The administration of President Joe Biden recently approved the transfer of $80 million in military assistance from the United States to Taiwan.
The money will be used to improve Taiwan’s joint and integrated defense capacities and marine domain awareness and maritime security.
It’s important to remember that the Foreign Military Financing (FMF) program usually benefits independent nations.
The US recognizes Taiwan as a sovereign country, but China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. There has long been friction between the two nations due to this essential difference.

China Warns of Lethal Consequences
The US military relocation to Taiwan has drawn criticism from the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s Wang Wenbin and the Global Times.
Wang stressed that such measures go against the one-China principle and the terms of earlier joint communiqués between China and the United States, including the August 17 Communiqué of 1982.
He claimed that these actions are against international law and conventions, imperil China’s sovereignty and security interests, and threaten the tranquility and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
In his statements, Wang vehemently opposed any outside meddling in what China regarded as its domestic affairs.
Tensions between the two countries are increasing as China expresses its strong opposition to American initiatives.
A poll commissioned by Newsweek revealed that most Americans would favor military action if China invaded Taiwan, demonstrating the US’s continued support for Taiwan.
The recent US military financing program for Taiwan has rekindled long-standing tensions between the United States and China.
Given that both countries are adamant about their stances on Taiwan’s status, China’s threat of ‘lethal consequences’ highlights the delicate nature of the Taiwan problem.
The issue continues to be a significant source of friction in the already convoluted relations between the United States and China.
