Fulton County DA Fani Willis Remains Unaffected as Gov. Kemp Rejects Calls for Discipline After Trump Indictment

Following the indictment of former President Donald Trump, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has refused to yield to escalating pressure calling for the discipline or removal of Fulton County District Attorney (DA) Fani Willis.

Trump supporters have responded strongly to the indictment, which Willis is leading and which alleges a conspiracy to invalidate the results of the 2020 election.

Georgia Governor Kemp Stands Strong Against Calls for Fulton County DA’s Discipline

Due to her legal action, Fani Willis, a Democrat and the first Black woman to hold the position has become embroiled in a storm of controversy.

Governor Kemp asserts that the law and the Constitution must take precedence over political considerations despite being the target of criticism and demands for her removal.

Kemp addressed the issue at a press conference, clarifying that he is committed to upholding the rule of law regardless of the political consequences.

“As long as I am governor, we will adhere to the law and the Constitution, irrespective of who it benefits politically.”

Kemp declared a special session of the Georgia legislature to remove DA Willis impractical and possibly unconstitutional in response to calls for its convening.

He stated, “Up to this point, I have seen no evidence that the actions or inactions of DA Willis warrant action by the prosecuting attorney oversight commission. However, this will ultimately be determined by the commission.”

Kemp had previously signed into law the establishment of the Prosecuting Attorney Qualifications Commission to hold prosecutors accountable.

This commission has the authority to discipline, remove, or take other action against prosecutors who violate legal standards.

The participation of Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, who represents over 530 congregations, has intensified the controversy surrounding Willis.

Jackson, the African Methodist Episcopal Church leader in Georgia, recently urged Gov. Kemp to oppose publicly Republican efforts to remove or discipline DA Willis.

This request comes at a time when several Republican governors are attempting to rein in prosecutors with liberal leanings.

Governor Kemp’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law and the Constitution underscores his stance as he navigates the complex landscape of legal and political challenges as the political debate rages on.
