Hurricane Idalia, a rare Category 3 storm, has struck Florida’s Big Bend with unprecedented force, unmatched in 125 years on the Gulf Coast.
The hurricane’s core struck the shores near Keaton Beach early Wednesday morning, pummeling the vulnerable area with deadly storm surges and catastrophic winds.
Florida Police’s Stern Storm Warning
As of 9 a.m. ET, the storm was unleashing sustained winds of up to 110 mph, posing a severe threat to inland Florida, as well as the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. Cedar Key, an island city particularly susceptible to such storms, experienced a record-breaking 8 to 9 feet of storm surge that left the city submerged.
The water level was rising at an alarming pace, predicted to reach heights equivalent to halfway up the second floor of an average building. Resident Michael Bobbitt described the scene as almost apocalyptic even before the storm’s full force hit, and he feared for the safety of those in low-lying areas and the elderly.
Authorities were clear in their warnings to residents. In Perry, a city in the Big Bend region, police urged citizens not to attempt to brave the storm, emphasizing that storm surges exceeding 15 feet were simply not survivable.

Storm Surges Linked to Hurricane-Related Deaths
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration revealed that storm surges account for a significant portion of hurricane-related fatalities.
Adding to the chaos, a rare extreme wind warning was issued for parts of the Big Bend area, where sustained winds of 115 mph or higher were expected. The warning compared the impending extreme winds to the approach of a tornado and urged residents to seek shelter immediately.
The destructive potential of Hurricane Idalia extended far beyond its initial landfall point. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned that the path of destruction could veer far from the storm’s predicted trajectory.
Numerous tornado warnings were already in effect, with the governor noting that these tornadoes could form even outside the expected cone shown on TV screens.
As the storm’s wrath continued to unfold, a tornado watch encompassing millions of people across Florida and Georgia persisted until 3 p.m. Coastal areas were grappling with floods and strong winds, causing widespread damage.
