Spain’s football community has been engulfed in a storm of criticism and condemnation following a controversial incident involving Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish football federation.
During the medal ceremony celebrating Spain’s women’s victory over England in the World Cup, cameras captured Rubiales planting an unsolicited kiss on professional player Jenni Hermoso’s lips.
Spanish Football Federation President Under Fire for Incident
The incident has ignited discussions about gender equality, workplace conduct, and the need for cultural change within the sport.
Rubiales’s action immediately drew backlash from various quarters, with critics describing it as “unacceptable,” “sexist,” and a “form of sexual violence.”
The acting minister of equality, Irene Montero, denounced the kiss as a violation of women’s rights, while the players’ union Fifpro based in the Netherlands condemned it as not appropriate or acceptable in any context.
Adding his voice to the chorus of criticism, acting Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez labeled the gesture “unacceptable” and emphasized that apologies were insufficient.
Sánchez called for concrete actions to address the issue and rectify the situation.
He stated that the incident underscored Spain’s need to make progress on equality and women’s rights.
Miguel Galán, a prominent figure in Spain’s football community who leads a national facility training football coaches, also expressed his dismay.
Galán filed an official complaint with the National Sports Council, the governing body overseeing sports in Spain.
In his complaint, Galán characterized the kiss as a “sexist, intolerable act in sport” that potentially violated both Spanish law and the Spanish football federation’s own protocols against sexism and sexual violence.

Gender Inequality in Focus After Controversial Incident
The controversy surrounding the kiss has cast a shadow over Spain’s World Cup victory and has put a spotlight on the persistent issues of inequality and gender discrimination in women’s football.
While the team’s success is celebrated, the incident highlights the challenges female athletes continue to face in terms of recognition, support, and fair treatment within the sport.
Rubiales’s response to the incident, which included dismissive comments followed by a tepid apology, further fueled public outrage.
His actions have prompted calls for his resignation, with the acting Labour minister and second deputy prime minister, Yolanda Díaz, asserting that he had harassed and assaulted a woman.
As the nation grapples with this controversy, it also grapples with deeper questions about cultural norms, workplace ethics, and the progress of gender equality in sports.
While Spain’s women’s team basks in their victory, they also serve as a beacon for change, inspiring future generations to challenge injustice and push for lasting transformation in the world of sports.
