An unusual find along Idaho’s Salmon River has surprised and amused many, with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game (IDFG) suspecting a playful prank.
Reports flooded in, surprising officials, as numerous calls and emails detailed an astonishing find: a shark washed up on the banks of the landlocked state’s Salmon River near Riggins. The IDFG swiftly launched an investigation into the unusual incident.
Shark Stranding Stuns Officials in Landlocked State
Upon arrival at the scene referenced in the reports, IDFG officials encountered a lifeless creature that baffled even seasoned experts. Later identified as a salmon shark, the creature was captured in two photos shared on the department’s Instagram account.
Salmon sharks, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, are known to grow over 10 feet long, with an average size of 6.5 to 8 feet and a maximum weight exceeding 660 pounds.
Typically found in the North Pacific Ocean’s coastal and oceanic environments, they feast on salmon, squid, herring, and birds and boast a maximum lifespan of 25 years.

Serious Nature of Shark Concerns Beyond Idaho

While shark sightings in Idaho may elicit laughter, these marine creatures are a serious matter in other parts of the country, with a history of attacks on humans.
Tracking Sharks reports that the U.S. has seen 31 shark bite attacks this year. Experts advise beachgoers to swim within sight of lifeguards, avoid swimming at dawn and dusk, steer clear of the water shortly after storms, refrain from solo ocean swims, and remain calm if a shark is spotted.
