Port Huron Float Down Attendees Urged to Heed US and Canada Coast Guard Warning

In a joint effort to prioritize public safety, the United States and Canadian coast guards are unequivocally advising residents and visitors to abstain from participating in the upcoming Port Huron Float Down event this Sunday.

The annual tradition, involving individuals floating down the river on inflatable devices, has long been criticized by law enforcement and rescue crews for the inherent risks it poses to participants.

Coast Guards Advise Against Port Huron Float Down Event Due to Safety Concerns

Highlighting the perilous nature of the event, the coast guards emphasize a multitude of high-risk factors that could culminate in severe injuries or even fatalities.

The factors include the swift river currents, unpredictable weather conditions, water temperature, the large number of participants, the absence of life jackets, alcohol consumption, and limited rescue resources.

The coast guards’ joint statement reflects their deep concern about the potential for challenging emergency scenarios that could ensue from the convergence of these risk factors.

Citing past incidents during similar river float events, the coast guards emphasize the urgency of their warning.

The tragic drowning of a man in 2014 and the hazardous high winds in 2016 that propelled approximately 1,500 participants across the border into Canada underscore the potential dangers associated with the Port Huron Float Down.

Despite previous condemnations, the annual event has continued to attract participants, with hundreds to thousands traveling up to seven miles on the St. Clair River from Port Huron to Marysville.

The journey typically commences around 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Beach, extending for hours until participants reach Marysville’s Chrysler Beach.

Acknowledging the event’s popularity, the US and Canadian coast guards are taking proactive measures to mitigate risks.

Boat traffic on the river will be suspended from noon to 7 pm on the day of the event in a bid to reduce the potential for incidents.

In a joint effort to prioritize public safety, the United States and Canadian coast guards are unequivocally advising residents and visitors to abstain from participating in the upcoming Port Huron Float Down event this Sunday.

While strongly discouraging participation, the Coast Guards also offer a set of safety recommendations for those who still opt to partake.

Among these recommendations are wearing a life jacket, carrying a waterproof bag for personal items, having a paddle handy to counter fast currents, informing someone about the planned route and schedule, having a friend keep watch, refraining from alcohol consumption, using appropriate clothing, utilizing a float that minimizes water exposure, staying close to the shore, and labeling the floatation device with a name and contact number.

Considering the anticipated temperature of 85 degrees in Port Huron on Sunday, the coast guard underscores the significance of water temperature, indicating that temperatures below 70 degrees can lead to hypothermia.

In their concluding remarks, the US and Canadian Coast Guards emphasize the shared responsibility of ensuring marine safety.

While acknowledging their limited resources, the Coast Guards encourage individuals to look out for each other, exercise responsible behavior, wear life jackets, and avoid alcohol consumption while on the water.

By adhering to these safety measures, participants can significantly enhance their chances of returning home safely after the event.
