The Chinese embassy in Russia has raised strong objections to the treatment of five Chinese citizens who were denied entry into Russia, stating that it is inconsistent with the overall friendly relations between the two countries.
The incident occurred when the five individuals attempted to drive into Russia from Kazakhstan late last month.
Chinese Embassy Protests Russia’s Denial of Entry
After enduring four hours of examination, they were refused entry, and to exacerbate matters, their visas were subsequently canceled.
In response to the troubling incident, the Chinese embassy held meetings with Russia’s foreign ministry and border agencies, explicitly pointing out the brutal and excessive law enforcement used by Russia during the encounter.
The embassy asserted that this heavy-handed approach significantly infringed upon the legitimate rights and interests of the Chinese citizens involved.
Interestingly, the embassy cited previous statements made by Russian officials, in which they proclaimed Russia’s warm welcome to Chinese citizens and emphasized that there are no discriminatory policies against them.
However, the embassy highlighted that the destination stated on the visa applications of the five Chinese individuals did not align with their actual intended destination, further contributing to the complexity of the situation.

Diplomatic Ties Amid Global Uncertainties
The incident has put a strain on the otherwise strong relations between China and Russia. Both countries have continuously underscored their close ties, particularly since Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin announced a “no limits” partnership in February 2022.
This alliance was celebrated when Putin visited Beijing for the opening of the Winter Olympics, merely days before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
In light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, China has taken an active role in seeking a peaceful resolution. It was announced that a senior Chinese official will be sent to Saudi Arabia for weekend talks aimed at facilitating a peaceful settlement to the war.
Notably, these discussions will exclude Russia, which is seen as a significant diplomatic coup for Kyiv, the Western nations, and the Saudi hosts.
This incident highlights the complexities and challenges faced in maintaining strong diplomatic ties between nations amidst geopolitical conflicts.
The treatment of the Chinese citizens has not only caused a diplomatic rift but also raises concerns about the safeguarding of the rights of foreign nationals during border encounters.
As both China and Russia strive to navigate the intricacies of their relationship in the face of global uncertainties, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact their future interactions and cooperation on international matters.
