Ex-President Trump Reacts to Pence’s Remarks on Indictment

Former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence are engaging in a heated exchange after Pence criticized Trump’s legal team’s conduct on Jan. 6.

Pence’s remarks came during a campaign speech at the Indiana State Fair, where he rebuked Trump’s claims about the vice president’s power to overturn election results and condemned the crackpot lawyers advising Trump.

Trump and Pence Clash Over Jan. 6 Allegations

In response to Pence’s comments, Trump took to Truth Social to issue a scathing retort. He expressed pity for Pence, accusing him of lacking support and loyalty from those who should be backing him due to his association with the Trump Administration.

Trump also doubled down on his assertion that Pence had the power to reject electors, citing a purported Fake Indictment as evidence, despite the fact that such authority is not granted to the vice president by law.

The Electoral Count Act of 1887 clearly defines the vice president’s role in the electoral process as ceremonial, ensuring the votes are opened and read out.

Additionally, the Electoral Count Reform Act of 2022 reinforced this limitation, specifying that the vice president does not have the power to unilaterally decide the fate of an elector.

Pence’s criticism of Trump’s legal team and his refusal to accede to Trump’s wishes on Jan. 6 has strained his relationship with the Trump base, which constitutes a significant portion of the primary Republican electorate.

As Pence pursues the GOP nomination, he faces competition from around a dozen other contenders and must navigate a delicate balance to appeal to his supporters while staying true to his conservative values.

The former vice president’s campaign has focused on courting Christian evangelical voters in Iowa, with an emphasis on fiscal issues and social conservatism. During his campaign speech at the Indiana State Fair, Pence refrained from mentioning Trump and stated his intention to prioritize issues raised by voters, such as inflation.

One of Pence’s immediate challenges is qualifying for the debate stage. He expressed confidence in his fundraising efforts, claiming to collect around 1,000 donations daily and expects to meet the threshold to participate in upcoming debates within the next 10 days.

As the race for the GOP nomination unfolds, the clash between Trump and Pence highlights the divisions within the party and underscores the complexities of navigating the primary process with the support of a diverse voter base.

The competition among Republican candidates remains fierce, making the path to nomination challenging for all contenders, including former Vice President Mike Pence.
