Ford Recalls 870K F-150 Pickups for Parking Brake Issue

Ford has issued a significant recall for more than 870,000 newer F-150 pickup trucks in the United States due to a potentially dangerous issue with the electric parking brakes.

Some trucks with single exhaust systems from the 2021 through 2023 model years are included in the recall.

Ford Issues Recall for F-150 Pickups

This move comes as Ford’s F-Series pickups continue to hold their position as the top-selling vehicles in the US.

The safety concern centers around a rear wiring bundle that can come into contact with the rear axle housing.

Over time, this contact can cause chafing of the wiring, potentially leading to a short circuit. The short circuit, in turn, can trigger the electric parking brake to activate unexpectedly, posing an increased risk of a crash.

According to documents posted by government safety regulators on Friday, Ford has already received 918 warranty claims and three field reports of wire chafing incidents in North America. Among these reports, 299 cases indicated instances of unexpected parking brake activation, with 19 of these occurring while the trucks were in motion.

Although Ford is not aware of any reported crashes or injuries stemming from this issue, the automaker is taking proactive measures to address the problem and ensure the safety of its customers.

Ford has issued a significant recall for more than 870,000 newer F-150 pickup trucks in the United States due to a potentially dangerous issue with the electric parking brakes.

Starting from September 11, Ford will notify affected truck owners by letter regarding the recall. Owners are encouraged to bring their vehicles to authorized dealers for inspection.

The rear wire harness will be replaced if the protective tape has worn through.

If the tape is not worn, dealers will install a protective tie strap and apply tape wrap to safeguard the wiring from potential chafing.
