North Korea’s First Post-Pandemic Visits China and Russia Welcomed with Military Display

A Russian delegation, headed by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, has arrived in North Korea to participate in the country’s celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

Joining them later will be a Chinese delegation, as the event is typically commemorated with massive military parades in Pyongyang.

Russian and Chinese Delegations Break North Korea’s Isolation

This visit holds significant importance as it marks the first time North Korea has allowed foreign delegations into its borders since closing them in early 2020 to prevent the spread of the pandemic.

During this period, the reclusive nation cut off all trade and diplomatic ties, even with its main economic and political partners, Russia and China.

This isolation led to severe shortages of essential goods like food and medicine, exacerbating the already dire food crisis the country was facing.

The inclusion of Russian and Chinese envoys in this year’s Victory Day parade, which commemorates the 1953 Korean armistice, has prompted speculation among analysts.

Some believe that this might indicate a possible relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, as North Koreans have been observed without masks in recent state media images.

The Russian delegation, arriving on Tuesday, received a warm welcome at an airport in Pyongyang.

Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu was greeted with a line of saluting soldiers and a red banner that read, “Welcome, Comrade Defence Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu!” in both Korean and Russian.

Geopolitical Significance Unfolds

A Russian delegation, headed by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, has arrived in North Korea to participate in the country’s celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

The group from China is expected to arrive on Wednesday and be led by Li Hongzhong, a member of the Chinese Communist Party’s central policymaking committee.

Both Russia and China have been longstanding allies of North Korea, with China sending troops to support the country during the war with South Korea in 1950, and the Soviet Union providing assistance as well.

Russia’s alliance with North Korea has endured since the collapse of the USSR in 1991, primarily driven by their mutual opposition to the United States.

North Korea has also been charged by the US with giving Russia military assistance during its fight in Ukraine, but both Pyongyang and Moscow refute these accusations.

Mr. Shoigu’s visit comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions between Russia and the US due to the Ukraine war, while US-China relations are strained over issues surrounding Taiwan.

Adding to the complexities, the United States has been trying to establish communication with North Korea after a recent incident involving a US soldier named Travis King. Pvt. King fled to North Korea while on a tour at the Joint Security Area (JSA) within the Demilitarised Zone (DMZ) that divides North and South Korea.

Although the United Nations Command confirmed dialogue with North Korea over Pvt. King, specific details were not disclosed.

As the world watches these diplomatic interactions unfold, the presence of Russian and Chinese delegations in North Korea’s anniversary celebrations raises questions about potential developments in the country’s policies and international relations.
